Vbox7

THE DOCUMENTARY DIAGNOSIS OF IN THE PALACE ISFF '2012 - Press Release
2012-05-30

IN THE PALACE ISFF will present one of the brightest achievements in the documentary film field lately.

Hits that have earned some of the most prestigious awards for achievements in documentary filmmaking will be presented to the public during the 10th edition of IN THE PALACE ISFF. Among the especially chosen titles are Cinema Komunisto, The World According to Ion B., Cooking History. 6 wars ★ 11 recipes ★ 60 361 024 dead, The Desert of Forbidden Art and I Love You.

Some of the newest world-renown documentary snapshots, all of them show incredibly accurate exploration of our spiritual heritage, telling us today the undocumented story of our communist past.

Cinema Komunisto is a film debut for the serbian director Mila Turajlic, but it is a real accomplishment in the field of documentary. It is build over archive from 320 movies, shot in the legendary movie studio “Avala” - the famous studio that was under Tito's patronage. A real journey through forgotten shooting locations, falling apart decors, that show the rise and fall of the illusion called Yugoslavia and the personal love of the dictator to cinema. Cinema Komunisto won 15 awards from the most prestigious film festivals in the world, among which the award for documentary in Tribeca FF '2011.

The beggar – superstar, or The World According to Ion B. Alexander Nanau's film follows the anonymous dreams of a person, wandering though the streets of Bucharest. In the 70's, this homeless man creates pop art works, hiding them from Chaushesku's regime. Emotional movie portrait of one unique and incredible talent, The World According to Ion B. shows the journey of Ion Barladeanu and his collages from the dumping grounds of Bucharest to expositions in prestigious European galleries along with the masterpieces of Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp.

How does food influenced wins and falls of the European statesman? Who would have guessed, that war could be led with pots, and pans, and salt shakers? Cooking History. 6 wars ★ 11 recipes ★ 60 361 024 dead (dir. Peter Kerekes) is a film that shows us the influence of the field kitchens in the war actions – the kitchen as a model of the world, the food preparation as a war strategy. The fight for high ideals is leaning on the stable legs of one kitchen table. The film is based on 11 recipes of the war cooks from the time of the Second World War to the war in Chechnya, and from France to the Balkans all the way to Russia.

How does art survive through the time of repression? In the era of socialist Russia the artists true to their vision were executed, send to psychiatric hospital or GULAG. Their fate inspires igor Savitsky, over whose fate and private collection is focused The Desert of Forbidden Art (dir. Amanda Pope, Tchavdar Georgiev). In theory Savitsky buys “approved” authors, in practice - he saves 40 000 forbidden art pieces of his friends, creating a museum in the middle of the desert in Uzbekistan, far from the eye of KGB. Savitsky manages to collect wide mix of russian avangard, but his biggest find is unknown school of painters, hiding in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution in 1917.

I Love You is the first joint project of the young russian directors Alexander Rastorguev and Pavel Kostomarov. The tandem makes an unprecedented experiment – during a casting in the russian city Rostov-on-Don the directors choose their actors from non-actor people, giving them a handy camera with the task to shoot few scenes of their life. The film takes 2 years to be finished, and the result is one of the best experimental pictures lately and a relentlessly sharp image of the modern russian life.

All festival activities during the Anniversary edition of  IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival are open access for the audience.

You can buy tickets at the offices of Eventim and their partners in the country, as well as online at www.eventim.bg.

The 9th In The Palace International Short Film Festival ended in the early morning of June 26th when we said "Cheers, Friends!" for the last time. For the past 168 hours we have been watching movies together, learning about cinema together, laughing and falling in love IN THE PALACE.

We would not have made it without YOU all, for whom cinema and art are our common gravitational field, without which matter would not come together in such large masses and life as we know it now, would not exist.

Thank you and see you soon!
